Is Juneteenth a paid federal holiday? - Federal Times

Image
Juneeteenth, a combination of the day and month of the holiday commemorating the end of slavery, is the newest federal holiday designed by the U.S government. The holiday became officially recognized on June 17, 2021, by President Joe Biden. Though often confused with Emancipation Day, which is observed two months earlier by Washington D.C.’s local government and celebrates the signing of the President Abraham Lincoln’s historic proclamation outlawing slavery, Juneteenth celebrates the day that news finally made it to more than 250,000 enslaved Black people living in Texas in 1865. The Emancipation Proclamation declared enslaved African American people to be freed in Southern states, though because Texas was still under Confederate control, it would take almost two years from the date of Lincoln’s signage for those inhabitants to hear the news and be free themselves. The union army arrived in Galveston, Texas, on June 19 1865 and brought word that slavery had been abolished. The

European parliament to discuss tough rules for holiday rentals ... - DutchNews.nl

Image
The European parliament will this week start discussing new rules for holiday rental companies such as Airbnb and Booking.com, which aim to give local councils the power to order the de-listing of properties that do not comply with certain requirements. Dutch GroenLinks MEP Kim Van Sparrentak is spearheading the effort and will present her proposals to the parliament’s internal market and consumer protection committee on Tuesday. People spent about 547 million nights in homes rented via Airbnb, Booking.com, Expedia or Tripadvisor across the EU in 2022, according the EU statistical office Eurostat. “The recent growth in online short-term rental accommodation services has impacted society in many ways,” the report by Van Sparrentak says. While this has been positive from a tourism perspective it has also been negative, by “extracting long-term housing from the market in popular tourist destinations, increased housing prices, and a loss of grip on where tourism activity takes place,

Image
OTTAWA, May 20 (Reuters) - Firefighters in Alberta are on high alert for a surge in blazes over a long weekend in the oil-rich Canadian province, which is enduring throttled energy production, home evacuations and property damage after an intense start to the wildfire season. Record-high temperatures and lack of rain this year have led to widespread fires burning nearly 830,000 hectares (2 million acres) of land in Alberta, about 10 times the size of the province's largest city, Calgary, according to Alberta Wildfire. Ahead of the Victoria Day weekend, authorities have closed some parks and campgrounds in Alberta, and are urging residents to avoid activities that could enrage wildfires, to avoid straining firefighting resources. The holiday weekend, when residents traditionally go camping or enjoy other outdoor activities in warmer weather, usually sees an uptick in seasonal wildfires, some of which are accidentally caused by people. "We will all be on high alert this
