Even a joyous holiday season can cause stress for most Americans - APA Psychology News

Image
Washington — U.S. adults are feeling joyous but overwhelmed this holiday season, as nearly nine in 10 (89%) say that concerns such as not having enough money, missing loved ones and anticipating family conflict cause them stress at this time of year, according to the results of a new poll by the American Psychological Association. While nearly half of U.S. adults (49%) would describe their stress levels during the traditional U.S. holiday season between November and January as “moderate,” around two in five (41%) said their stress increases during this time compared with other points in the year. While stress appears to be common at this time of year, 43% said that the stress of the holidays interferes with their ability to enjoy them and 36% said the holidays feel like a competition. “The holiday season can be both a happy and stressful time of year in part due to expectations to spend time with family and friends, navigate family conflicts and uphold important traditions,” said

Consumers plan to increase spending this holiday season: survey - Fox Business

Image
This year's holiday spending plan gives little hint over worry about where the U.S. economy is headed, a recent Deloitte survey said. ( iStock ) Consumer holiday spending plans give little indication that Americans are worried about inflation and the risk of recession, according to a recent Deloitte  survey . Spending this holiday season is expected to surpass pre-pandemic levels for the first time, the survey said. Consumers said they plan to spend an average of $1,652, representing a 14% year-over-year increase. Although consumers across all income levels plan to do holiday shopping, nearly 30% of shoppers will be responsible for almost 70% of the holiday spending this year, spending an expected average of $2,146 or more this season. These high spenders are focused on high-quality products, while other shoppers concentrate on getting a great deal. These shoppers may be right to dismiss recession concerns. White House holiday decor invites visitors to embrace ‘their inner child’ - WFLA

Image
WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) – First lady Dr. Jill Biden, is announcing this year’s holiday theme at the White House. She said the theme, “Magic, Wonder and Joy,” is designed for visitors to see the holidays through the eyes of a child. The White House says the décor includes 98 Christmas trees, more than 142,000 lights and nearly 34,000 ornaments. There are also numerous tributes to the 200 th anniversary of the publication of “Twas the Night Before Christmas.” The first Christmas tree displayed inside the White House is decorated with wooden Gold Star ornaments that are engraved with the names of fallen service members. The 18.5-foot-tall official White House Christmas tree, located in the Blue Room, celebrates cheerful scenes, landscapes and neighborhoods from across the country. The East Room features Advent calendars counting down the days to Christmas with a surprise behind each number. The official White House Menorah is on display in the Cross Hall, which runs between the State

Holiday bounty starts now - WAMC

Much like the shopping malls, holiday entertainment starts in full swing right after Thanksgiving. Indeed, a lot of the merriment appears front-loaded. This week, two of the area’s favorite holiday events take place. Both the Victorian Street Walk on Thursday evening in downtown Saratoga and the Victorian Stroll which happens throughout downtown Troy on Sunday afternoon, December 4, are great communal events. Many people dress in period garb and some free entertainments are available. But, not everything is free. Troy Foundry Theatre is holding a holiday fund raising event at 19 3 rd Street, downtown Troy. It is a one man version of “A Christmas Carol,” Dickens’ treasured tale about the redemption of Ebenezer Scrooge. It runs December 2-4. December 3 is a very busy day. It’s the afternoon of the Albany Symphony Orchestra’s holiday extravaganza “Magic of Christmas” at The Palace Theatre in Albany. It’s one of the most popular ASO events of the year. Meanwhile, the granddaddy of loc

Holiday shopping continues to increase with online buying - WKYT

Image
LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - In years past, the image of Black Friday shopping may include seemingly endless lines of eager shoppers out before dawn. However, with online shopping being more accessible than ever, those images seem to be fading. “There are a lot of brick-and-mortar retailers that are much better integrated with online sales than they were in the past,” said Dr. Aaron Garvey, an associate professor at UK’s Gatton College of Business and Economics. “They still offer some exclusive promotions in store on Black Friday, but less so than in years past.” While the shift has been in motion for years, Dr. Garvey said the pandemic sped up the momentum towards online shopping. Another influence has been social media. The presence of influencers allows for the sharing of product information to extend beyond family and friends. “People are sharing information online about deals. They’re sharing information about gifts. They can do it on social media easily with family, but they can

Energized shoppers break one-day holiday sales record - CNN

Image
CNN  —  Whether they jostled through brick-and-mortar stores or toggled between tabs and virtual carts, holiday shoppers were eager to participate in Black Friday this year. Both in-store and online retail sales increased year-over-year unadjusted for inflation, according to Mastercard’s SpendingPulse insights, which noted that apparel, jewelry and restaurant categories saw considerable spikes. In-store sales jumped a little more than 1%, while e-commerce led the charge with an increase of 8.5%. However, Sensormatic Solutions, which tracks shopper traffic at brick-and-mortar stores, found that visits on Black Friday were up 4.6% from 2022. This is a turnaround for retailers, the company said, as foot traffic has been down an average of 2.4% this year. “Though we anticipated an increase, in-store shopper traffic outperformed our expectations,” Grant Gustafson, head of retail consulting and analytics at Sensormatic, said in a statement. “Consumers are again finding joy in brick-and

The holiday shopping season kicks off this weekend - KRTV NEWS Great Falls

Meals have been eaten and naps have been had, and now it's time to get serious about our holiday shopping. But for many of us, getting the best bang for our buck started weeks ago. In years past shoppers lined up outside store doors waiting to snag the perfect gift at a discount. But with shopping deals rolling out earlier and earlier, Daniel Roccato, clinical professor of finance at University of San Diego, says Black Friday has really morphed into a gray November. Online or in a store, more than 180 million people are expected to dish out their shopping dollars this weekend. Despite that number, Roccato says shoppers may be a little more moderate with their spending this year. According to the  National Retail Federation , this year's kickoff to the holiday shopping season will be the busiest since they began tracking numbers in 2017. "People are already coming early and getting their presents and all sorts of stuff," says Mike Thorpe, manager at Sports Den in

"Travel Tuesday" emerges as a prime day for holiday and winter travel deals - CBS News

Image
As the holiday shopping frenzy grips the nation, with over 180 million Americans poised to shop from Thanksgiving through Cyber Monday, the travel industry is carving out its niche with "Travel Tuesday." Travel experts call it the best opportunity to snag holiday travel and winter getaway deals. Travel deals extend beyond Black Friday , continuing into Cyber Monday and culminating in "Travel Tuesday." The day after Thanksgiving promises a broader range of discounts, especially for those flexible with their travel dates and destinations.  Major players in the industry like Royal Caribbean are offering significant discounts, including an extra $750 off on top of up to 30% discounts, with a booking deadline set for Tuesday. Frontier Airlines is enticing travelers with a year-long "all you can fly" pass for under $500. Spirit Airlines is not far behind, offering flights as low as $20 to destinations like Vegas, Miami and Chicago. Additionally, Priority Pass

Bad news for Black Friday: Retailers cast doubt on holiday shopping with cautious guidance - CNBC

Saul Loeb | AFP | Getty Images There's a dark cloud hanging over Black Friday. A slew of retailers have issued tepid, cautious or downright disappointing fourth-quarter outlooks over the past few weeks, casting a pall over the crucial holiday season right as they gear up for the biggest shopping day of the year. The companies, which include everyone from luxury goods giant Tapestry to big boxer BJ's Wholesale Club , cited a host of dynamics that led them to reduce their outlooks or issue forecasts that came in below expectations.  Some, such as Best Buy and Nordstrom , cited the uncertain state of the consumer following months of persistent inflation, while others, such as Hanesbrands , said demand is simply drying up for its basic T-shirts, socks and underwear as wholesalers look to keep inventories in chec

As Holiday Shopping Season Begins, Retailers Worry - The New York Times

Image
Consumer spending has been strong in 2023 despite higher prices and waning savings. But some retailers have jitters heading into Black Friday. Christina Beck is approaching this holiday season cautiously. Ms. Beck, a 58-year-old administrative director at a school, makes lists of gifts she plans to buy for her family and friends and sticks with it. But her spending this year will be kept in check by the high cost of food in grocery stores and restaurants, and the mortgage for a home in Minneapolis she bought last year with her best friend. That best friend, Kristin Aitchison, cannot wait for the holidays. Ms. Aitchison, 55, who works for a senior living home, advises her family each year that she plans to make the holidays smaller, spending less. And every year, she spends more than she did the year before. “I’m a huge gift giver,” Ms. Aitchison, who started her shopping in early November. “I have so much joy in giving gifts. I’m always running around the last week before Christ

As Holiday Shopping Beckons, Retailers Ratchet Down Their ... - Investopedia

Image
KEY TAKEAWAYS As Black Friday and Cyber Monday loom, mixed forecasts heighten holiday sales uncertainty. Most retailers have taken a cautious approach to their expectations. Inflation-weary consumers likely will target discounts to an even greater degree than usual. Holiday spending forecasts appear about as uncertain as the U.S. economy in recent months, but those closest to the action—retailers—seem resigned to a somewhat subdued shopping season. Retail giants Walmart ( WMT ) and Target ( TGT ) recently warned they expected weakening sales in this year's fourth quarter, echoing concerns expressed from a variety of their smaller rivals. That includes electronics retailer Best Buy ( BBY ), which Tuesday sliced its full-year sales forecast. As the year's biggest shopping weekend looms, those concerns seemingly contradict various surveys predicting increased holiday spending . They're more in line, though, with a U.S. economy expected to produce less than

Bill Gates’ holiday list: 3 of the best books he read in 2023—plus 2 other recommendations 'just for fun' - CNBC

Image
Bill Gates is once again marking the holiday season with a list of some of his favorite books he read in the past year. And this time, he left a couple extra gifts at the bottom of the stocking. Gates is a prodigious reader who reads roughly 50 books each year and regularly releases seasonal lists recommending his favorites. His latest holiday list also includes a series of online economics lectures he calls "fantastic" and a holiday-themed Spotify playlist "just for fun." "I love holiday music and have put together a list of some favorites — classics and modern tunes, from the U.S. and around the world," Gates wrote in a blog post on Monday. The Microsoft co-founder's recommendations kick off with three non-fiction books that he says "came to mind right away" when he started writing the list. Here they are, along with his holiday mix and the online courses from a lecturer Gates describes as "one of my all-time favorite professor
