European parliament to discuss tough rules for holiday rentals ... - DutchNews.nl

Image
The European parliament will this week start discussing new rules for holiday rental companies such as Airbnb and Booking.com, which aim to give local councils the power to order the de-listing of properties that do not comply with certain requirements. Dutch GroenLinks MEP Kim Van Sparrentak is spearheading the effort and will present her proposals to the parliament’s internal market and consumer protection committee on Tuesday. People spent about 547 million nights in homes rented via Airbnb, Booking.com, Expedia or Tripadvisor across the EU in 2022, according the EU statistical office Eurostat. “The recent growth in online short-term rental accommodation services has impacted society in many ways,” the report by Van Sparrentak says. While this has been positive from a tourism perspective it has also been negative, by “extracting long-term housing from the market in popular tourist destinations, increased housing prices, and a loss of grip on where tourism activity takes place,...

Turn off your email, get the packing right – and never, ever play Monopoly: 15 tips for a happy holiday - The Guardian

Spend your money on space rather than travel “All mammals get aggressive when crowded,” says clinical psychologist Linda Blair . “Save money on long-distance travel and invest instead in generously sized accommodation where you won’t be on top of each other. Everyone needs a place to retreat to – it’s how you keep stress levels down.” Do not aim for perfection In the adverts, holidays are a magical montage of tinkling laughter and adorable children splashing in the water watched by Mum and Dad holding hands on twin sun loungers. In real life, all the loungers are taken by 7.30am and the kids are drenching everyone by dive-bombing in to the pool while you chase them with a bottle of sun lotion. But that’s OK. The pressure to have a perfect holiday is a massive buzzkill. Stuff goes wrong when you travel: trains are cancelled, someone gets an upset stomach, the tent leaks. Holidays are about spending time with people you care about, having new experiences and relishing life in all i...

Topline Juneteenth, the American holiday to celebrate the end of enslavement in the United States—and the latest federal holiday—will likely go into full-scale celebrations this year with the coronavirus no longer a national emergency and tamping down on public events. Key Facts Juneteenth is a federally recognized holiday that celebrates the end of enslavement in the United States. When Is Juneteenth—and What Is It? Juneteenth (a combination of June and 19) is celebrated on June 19 and, because the holiday falls on a Monday this year, that is when it will be observed. Desert Hot Springs to formally recognize Juneteenth public holiday DESERT HOT SPRINGS — The idea to honor Juneteenth as a public holiday bubbled up to the Mayor and City Council through a public records specialist in the city Police Department. Floylaina “Flo” Smith, who works in the Police Department Records Department, reached out to Council Member Jan Pye. Together they educated city staff on the idea that even though it is a federal holiday the City Council would still need to adopt a Resolution to make it a city holiday, Mayor Scott Matas told Uken Report. Scott Matas “I feel kinda foolish for not recognizing this and bringing it forward sooner,” Matas said. Either way, he said, the City Council heard the request and unanimously supported it, adding it to the list of holidays that the city will observe, close its offices and pay its staff. Matas said the public holiday is designed “to reflect on the struggles that our African Americans went through during times of slav...

Daisy Jones & the Six is a blueprint for delicious holiday style - The Guardian

A rock’n’roll saga of love triangles, cocaine and tour buses might not sound of immediate relevance to your real-life summer holiday. Or hey, maybe it does – no judgment! Either way, if you haven’t watched Daisy Jones & the Six , the Amazon Prime ten-parter, then I’m here to tell you that you really, really should. Mainly you should watch it because it is just so much fun. Sexy, gripping, atmospheric, the sofa-viewing equivalent of a perfect sunlounger summer novel. (It is based on Taylor Jenkins Reid’s perfect sunlounger read of the same name.) But specifically you should watch it for its wardrobe, because it is a blueprint for the most delicious summer-holiday style. Daisy Jones & the Six is the story of a rock’n’roll band in 1970s California, by which I mean it is basically the story of Fleetwood Mac (the makers said they were partly inspired by the band). Guitar cases and whisky bottles and intimate love-hate duets sung up close and personal on stage in front of thousan...
