When the next bank holiday is in the UK, and the full list of 2022 holiday dates - iNews
A bank holiday gives many people a well-earned day off, and the UK has had an extra one this year thanks to the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations.
People in England, Wales and Northern Ireland got their most recent day off on Monday 29 August, after Scotland’s holiday fell earlier in the month.
However, there aren’t many opportunities for a long weekend left this year – here are all the remaining bank holidays in 2022.
When is the next UK bank holiday?
For people in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, following the August bank holiday the next bank holiday won’t be until Monday 26 December, which marks Boxing Day around the UK.
This year, Christmas Day falls on a Sunday, which means a UK-wide substitute bank holiday will be held on Tuesday 27 December, giving many people a welcome four-day weekend.
New Year’s Day will also be on a Sunday as a result, so the first bank holiday of 2023 will be held on Monday 2 January as a replacement.
This also happened last year, when Christmas Day and Boxing Day were on Saturday and Sunday, with the bank holidays moving to Monday 27 and Tuesday 28 December respectively.
People in Scotland missed out on a day off on 29 August, but this was because their summer bank holiday was on Monday 1 August (it always falls on the first Monday of the month).
All four nations used to mark the same date, following the implementation of the Bank Holidays Act of 1871, introduced by the Liberal Politician Sir John Lubbock.
However, the date for England, Wales and Northern Ireland moved permanently to the final Monday of August in 1971, following a trial period which started in 1965.
Scotland does get an additional bank holiday before Christmas, though, with this year’s St Andrew’s Day holiday scheduled for Friday 25 November.
Here are the 2022 bank holiday dates for the four UK nations in full:
