MACAO, July 29 (Xinhua) -- China's Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) has stepped up academic exchanges with universities in the Chinese mainland and Portuguese-speaking countries (PSCs) during the summer holiday.
This week, a delegation from the University of Lisbon (ULisboa) visited the University of Macao (UM). The two sides exchanged views on deepening cooperation in areas such as scientific research, education, and talent cultivation.
Ho Iat Seng, chief executive of the Macao SAR, said when meeting with ULisboa Rector Luis Ferreira that Macao would continue to play its platform role between China and PSCs, to promote academic and scientific research collaboration among higher education institutions in the mainland, the Macao SAR and Portugal.
Ferreira expressed hope that the two universities will continue strengthening cooperation and exchanges to cultivate top talent for China and Portugal and open a new chapter in higher education cooperation between the two countries.
UM Rector Song Yonghua said the two universities, after signing a strategic cooperation framework agreement in April, have implemented a series of collaborations in various academic fields, including the establishment of a joint research center, organization of annual joint meetings, and the development of joint PhD programs.
A delegation from the Beijing Language and Culture University also discussed academic cooperation with UM in the fields of linguistics, language and brain science, sinology and Chinese literature to jointly promote academic and scientific and research development in Beijing and Macao.
In addition, a group of 20 students from UM and the East China Normal University in Shanghai visited each other's city during a summer exchange program and carried out field trips focusing on humanity, geography, science and technology, cultural innovation and nature.
A large program spanning half a year was also unveiled earlier this week, which is scheduled to organize up to 1,000 middle and primary students in Macao and its neighboring mainland city of Zhuhai for field trips to each other's city on the topics of popular science, history and culture. ■
