Post-Holiday Spending Softens Further in Mid-January - Barron's

A pullback in spending that follows the holiday season deepened in the third week of January, according to credit-card data collected by Citi.

The firm's analysts say total spending in the week ended Jan. 20 was down 14%, compared with a 10% drop in the week prior, and excluding food, spending was down 15.2%, compared with an 11.9% drop in the second week of January.

The first month of the year is currently on track to also be the weakest month of the year for the retail sector, the analysts say.
