‘It’s not a holiday; it’s a day to remember and honor’: How Richmonders are observing Memorial Day - WWBT

RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) -Memorial Day focuses on every person who lost their life in the military on the fourth Monday in May. As a federal holiday, most people are off work, and kids are out of school.

“It’s not a holiday, it’s a day to remember and honor,” said Governor Glenn Youngkin.

There are many things to do on a federal holiday; some spend it outside, while others do something a little unconventional.

Some people in Richmond flocked to Brown’s Island while the rain held off.

“We came down to just take a look and see the city and hopefully some history,” said Erica Edwards, visiting family from Seattle.

Some people shared with 12 On Your Side that they went to the Virginia War Memorial before heading to the water.

“I have a great amount of respect for troops and people that served, so on Memorial Day, being able to soak that all in really means something, especially knowing that my brother is in the army and I know other people who also served,” said Martin Enyinnaya, a Richmond resident.

Most everyone outside seemed to enjoy the overcast weather.

“It was so hot the last couple of days, so I am loving this weather,” Edwards said.

Others were doing what they could to help give back on a day when so many gave their lives.

“I can’t think of a better way if you’re looking for a way to serve your community, donate blood, save a life here in the Richmond area,” said Jonathan McNamara with The American Red Cross.

Even though it’s not going to war to fight for our country, one woman shared that she donates blood and platelets on Memorial Day.

“It makes me feel good like I’m doing something, helping others, and it’s just time,” Carol Seely said.
