After pressing Jerusalem for Ramadan calm, US lauds Israeli handling of holiday rows - The Times of Israel

Image
WASHINGTON — The Biden administration has expressed its satisfaction to Israel over the latter’s handling of security tensions during the holy Islamic month of Ramadan, an Israeli and a US official told The Times of Israel on Tuesday. The appreciation was conveyed during several conversations Biden officials have held with their Israeli counterparts over the past week, the senior Israeli official said. The message represented a rare nod of approval from the US to the four-month-old, hardline government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, whose efforts to overhaul the judiciary and expand Israel’s presence in the West Bank have led to an intense rebuke from US President Joe Biden himself as well as the summoning of Israel’s ambassador in Washington for a private dress-down. A senior US official said the Netanyahu government’s conduct had the Biden administration particularly apprehensive as Ramadan approached, given that the holy month in and of itself adds an extra layer of tens

Buyers concerned about NDC, staffing and travel disruption - Business Travel News Europe

Image
Airline distribution, post-Covid staffing and the traveller experience are set to be the key concerns for travel buyers in the coming months, according to the latest global survey by the Global Business Travel Association (GBTA). The association’s regular Business Travel Outlook poll surveyed more than 800 buyers, suppliers and other industry professionals around the world. The survey looked at recent attempts by airlines, particularly American Airlines , to “expedite” the introduction of NDC-enabled content by making a significant number of fares unavailable through EDIFACT-based legacy distribution channels. Most buyers (60 per cent) said they did not support these distribution moves by airlines - this compared to just 36 per cent of TMCs and suppliers who opposed this policy.  Just over half of buyers (53 per cent) also said that some airlines were moving too quickly to roll out NDC and had not given third-party intermediaries enough time to develop the right technology to faci

U.S. Hotels Set for Boost From Robust Travel and Direct Bookings - Skift Travel News

Image
Skift Take Hotel companies want to reduce their dependence on online travel agencies, which charge high commissions. But as hotel rates rise and economies get shakier, consumers may prefer to do more comparison shopping. Sean O'Neill U.S. hotel operators are expected to post a rise in first-quarter profit even as they pour in money to lure travelers to make bookings directly through their websites, instead of turning to travel agencies. While bookings have been getting a boost from increased business and leisure travel, the investments hotels have made to reduce their reliance on online travel agencies (OTAs), which tend to have higher marketing budgets, is eating into the gains. Last year, U.S. hotels received about $49 billion from online direct bookings and $57 billion from OTA bookings, according to travel market research firm Phocuswright. “During uncertain economic times, when travelers are looking to stretch their dollars as far as possible, OTAs can help drive dem

Leisure travel is back. Business travel is not. - Marketplace

Lots of people seem to be traveling lately . Airports are busy, while flights are mostly or completely full. And sure enough, lots of people are traveling lately. The Transportation Security Administration’s passenger numbers — how many people go through airport security every day — are almost the same now as before the pandemic. There were 2.4 million air travelers Monday, just about the same as April 24, 2019. And some 78 million passengers traveled in January this year, while there were 79.5 million travelers in January 2019. But the mix of travelers and the price of getting on that plane have changed a bunch since then. “Leisure travel has really come roaring back ,” said Lindsey Roeschke at polling firm Morning Consult. A lot of consumers are still flush with savings from the pandemic, she said. “People are excited to travel after a couple of years of really pulling back , because they missed out on travel for so long.” Revenue from business travel though is still down more

Traffic congestion and rail closures to disrupt UK bank holiday travel - The Guardian

Image
Drivers and train passengers have been warned they face congestion and disruption over the bank holiday weekend, with motoring organisations forecasting the biggest early May getaway for seven years and a main rail line partly closed. The RAC said it estimated 17.2m leisure trips would be taken by car in the UK between Friday 28 April and Monday 1 May, the most for the May bank holiday since 2016. Congestion is likely to be worse on the month’s first bank holiday than the subsequent long weekend break for the coronation, when the RAC expects fewer than 15m leisure trips. The RAC spokesperson Rod Dennis said: “While we’d expect more short breaks and day trips to the coast this coming weekend, when it comes to the coronation it’s likely major routes are less likely to be congested. “The big variable, as always, is what happens with the Great British weather. If temperatures finally increase and the sun makes more of an appearance, we could well see many more people jumping in the c

Traffic deadlock as millions return from Eid holiday - Hurriyet Daily News

Image
ISTANBUL Millions of people hit the roads across the country on April 23 to return home from coastal provinces or their hometowns where they spent the three-day-long Eid al-Fitr holiday . Traffic jams occurred from the north to the south as people, either by their own cars or passenger buses, head back home as police authorities said the junctions at the entrances to some provinces witnessed deadlocks. It took hours to pass through the partial traffic jams on the highways between Istanbul and the capital Ankara, as police have taken special precautions for Istanbul, the most crowded city in the country with a population of more than 15 million people. In the megacity, where the traffic has come to a standstill in places, the density was measured as 71 percent, according to the municipality’s data. Istanbul police have warned drivers to be more careful in the traffic during the holiday. Due to the departures, kilometers-long vehicle queues occurred in touristic sites where peop

The deadline to apply is April 30. Travel startups have enjoyed a good run. Phocuswright is tracking 3,306 startups founded since 2013, and these companies raised $76.5 billion* in funding through mid-April 2023. Initially, the COVID-19 pandemic seemed likely to devastate travel companies as the industry came to a standstill. However, most not only survived but prospered in the heady fundraising days of 2021 and 2022, which turned out to be some of the largest on record at $23.6 billion and $14 billion, respectively. Both years surpassed the previous record of $12.9 billion in 2018 (see Figure 1). *Notes: Funding data excludes acquisitions, mergers, and IPOs. Data incorporates ~$20 billion for autonomous vehicle companies, including ~$15 billion for GM’s Cruise. That s
