The average price across the top five Mediterranean destinations has risen by more than 30% compared with before the Covid-19 pandemic, well above the rate of inflation since 2019, according to data from the price comparison site, first reported by the BBC. Demand from travellers is outstripping supply, while soaring food price inflation and higher bills for fuel and wages are also driving the rise. TravelSupermarket’s chief executive, Richard Singer, said: “After a number of disrupted years of travel there is no escaping that demand for holidays is high as people look to book their much-deserved holi

Indonesians happy with longer Hari Raya Haji holiday but some ... - The Straits Times

Image
JAKARTA – Indonesian Muslims began their five-day Hari Raya Haji holiday on Wednesday, the longest granted by the government in what critics say is a populist move by President Joko Widodo.  The decision has drawn flak from business associations. They cited issues such as reduced productivity, disruption of export-import activities, and additional overtime costs for those who have to work during the extended holiday.  In Indonesia, this year’s Hari Raya Haji falls on Thursday. Besides the usual one-day holiday, the government has declared two extra days of holiday, bringing the total to five, including the weekend. The reasons for giving additional days off include spurring economic growth and tourism, and a chance to hold family gatherings. Businesses are also unhappy over the timing of the extended holiday’s announcement, which was made only a week earlier. According to an industry association, textile factories, for instance, have to keep their equipment running as predetermin

NYC declares Diwali as a public school holiday: Will it impact school calendar? - SILive.com

Image
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — New York City has officially declared Diwali as a public school holiday, Mayor Eric Adams announced on Monday. Diwali is a festival of lights and one of the major events celebrated by Hindus, Jains, Sikhs and Buddhists. It has been on track to become a public school holiday, giving students in New York City the day off to celebrate. “This is a victory, not only for the men and women of the Indian community and all communities that celebrate Diwali, but it’s a victory for New York,” said Adams. Earlier this month, New York State lawmakers passed a bill that would make Diwali a public school holiday after it was approved in both the state Assembly and Senate. The bill was introduced by Assemblywoman Jenifer Rajkumar, who represents South Queens. It relies on Gov. Kathy Hochul to sign the bill into law — though Adams said he feels “confident” that Hochul will do so. Upon its signage into law, the New York City Department of Education (DOE) will designate the D

NEW YORK (AP) — New York City will add the festival of Diwali to the list of public school holidays in recognition of the growth of the city’s South Asian and Indo-Caribbean communities, Mayor Eric Adams announced Monday. Diwali, known as the festival of lights, happens October or November, depending on the lunar calendar. However, this year it falls on Sunday Nov. 12 — meaning the 2023-2024 school calendar will not be affected by the change. Washington next month will become the first U.S. state to deduct taxes from workers’ paychecks to finance a new long-term care benefit for residents who can’t live independently due to illness, injury or aging-related conditions like dementia. Drivers in New York City will be charged extra in tolls to enter Manhattan south of 60th Street as part of a long-stalled congestion pricing plan. Juneteenth: Old for Some New for Others An Increasingly Important ... - The Organization for World Peace

Image
While Juneteenth, a holiday commemorating the emancipation of enslaved African Americans, is celebrated annually on the 19th of June, it only became a U.S. federal holiday two years ago when President Biden signed a bill to distinguish Juneteenth as an official federal holiday. The day holds great literal and symbolic significance because it marks the date African Americans across the entire country became free. Although Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation in January 1863, those enslaved in places still under Confederate control were not freed. On 19 June 1865, Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, their final stop in their journey across the Confederate states, to proclaim all slaves free by executive order of the United States. Ever since 1865, families and communities have gathered to commemorate the day, creating celebratory traditions such as parades, festivals, and cookouts. This year, President Biden hosted a concert on the White House grounds to celebrate
